It was acclaimed filmmaker Robert Altman who gave lavishly lanky, deliciously ditzy Shelley Duvall roles in the films for which she is best known (save that of Wendy Torrance in The Shining [1980]): Brewster McCloud (1970), McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), 3 Women (1977), and the lead to which she will be perpetually linked, that of cartoon hysteric Olive Oyl in Popeye (1980). And it was Altman who undoubtedly convinced the inimitably structured Duvall to engage in a skinworthy bathing scene in his Thieves Like Us (1974) and strip down to her shockingly sheer skivvies in his epic Nashville (1975).
