Although her renown is limited among smut consumers of today, Linda Lovelace was at one time--and in the long run will probably ultimately be--the most famous porn star in the world. Linda, due to her anatomically stunning performance in the beyond hugely successful porno chic movie Deep Throat (1972), became the first woman in the adult business whose name could appear in the Johnny Carson monologue and be recognized by a vast majority of the folks at home. A daughter of the Bronx, Linda had a brittle edge to her willowy beauty, her face as often as not set in a sullen pout. A 1969 lead role in a canine-appreciation film went largely unnoticed, but Lovelace rose like the sun of sin in Deep Throat. Starring as a sexually dissatisfied housewife who discovers that her clitoris has been embedded in the lower ranges of her esophagus, Linda's circus-like ability to swallow immense flesh swords and keep them down without gagging won her a vast celebrity but no credibility and not much more cash. Sadly, such was the recipe for bitterness and recriminations.
