The fluctuations of fame have played such havoc in the life and with the image of Debbie Reynolds that it's amazing she has retained the grit and self-presence to play the mother of all dysfunctioning mothers in comic social critic Albert Brooks's Mother (1996). Reynolds was not always the puttering, doddering matron she assays for Albert. Many years earlier she had secured her lasting fame as the wholesome blonde bride abandoned by heartthrob singer Eddie Fisher for a fling with seductress of the ages Elizabeth Taylor. Of course Debbie had been famous already, a warbler and a hoofer in musicals such as Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), and The Singing Nun (1966). Debbie got out of the habit of propriety briefly for a sweet series of shots of her perky epidermis clad in a belly-button-revealing bikini, a one-piece bathing suit, and an off-the-shoulder evening dress during the proceedings of How Sweet It Is! (1968). And how sweet it was. Until Liz stole Eddie.
